Earth Mother, star mother,
You who are called by a thousand names
May all remember we are cells in your body
and dance together.
You are the grain and the loaf
That sustains us each day.
And as you are patient with our struggles to learn
So shall we be patient with ourselves and each other.
We are radiant light and sacred dark
-The balance-
You are the embrace that heartens
And the freedom beyond fear.
Within you we are born, we grow, live, and die –
You bring us around to the circle of rebirth,
within us you dance
Forever.
-Starhawk-
The Spiral Dance is one of the big key secrets of creation, life and birth. When we conceive we wrap ourselves around our partners in a spiral embrace.
The very nature of our DNA is a spiral form. The unborn baby grows in a spiral arrangement or organs and tissues in our bodies. The cord from the placenta to the baby’s umbilicus is a spiral shape and is sometimes wrapped around the baby in a spiral shape.
When our babies are born and are able to birth themselves through the pelvic bowl of the mother, they descend in a spiral movement. As the head emerges, the baby rotates his or her shoulders and births in a spiral wave of energy.
When we hold our babies, we enfold them into our spiralling arms and they snuggle their heads into our necks in a spiral motion.
During pregnancy, the hips swing in a spiral movement and spiral dancing keeps the spine supple and strong. It softens and supples the ligaments and tendons supporting the pelvic bowl and within, our babies.
The most significant movement during labour is the spiral movement of the hips between and during surges(contractions) of energy, waves of strength that bring a baby to birth. Mothers can make this movement standing, kneeling, squatting, even semi reclining in a tub of water. The one position they cannot use this technique is when they are lying on a bed. Spiralling, and rotating the hips opens the pelvic bones by up to 23% and allows a woman to spontaneously eject her baby from her womb.
Spiralling helps to keep a mother soft and giving. Our solar system and precious earth are turning suspended in the spiral motion of the milky way and beyond that the universe. We humans are dancing the spiral of life, no less when we give birth to our babies.
